How much of a tile can lack adhesion?

Hvor meget af en flise må mangle vedhæftning?

When reviewing condition assessment reports from homes for sale, you will usually find markings of loose or hollow tiles. It is important to note that even if the tiles were installed correctly, it is not uncommon for there to be small areas of tile that are not properly bonded.

20% is usually the accepted amount of a tile's surface area that may lack proper adhesion. This means that if a tile measures 30 x 60 centimeters, an area of approximately 6 x 12 cm must be hollow. 20% is approximately the maximum for the tile to function – assuming the tile itself feels solid.

However, loose or hollow tiles make an annoying sound – which you can easily get rid of with ADIN.

How to repair loose tiles

Sådan repareres løse fliser

You can tell if your tiles are loose by gently tapping them and listening for a hollow sound. Another sign is cracked seals around the tile.

How to fix this

If you are unlucky and one of the tiles cracks – and replacement is not an option – there is a method to restore them manually. However, it is an expensive solution and it would usually be cheaper to have them repaired first.

What causes loose tiles?

Hvad forårsager løstsiddende fliser?

A common cause of loose tiles is poor adhesion between the tile itself and the mounting surface. In rooms where water and humidity are a problem, loose tiles can lead to mold or even unpleasant odors.

Here are a few examples of different problems and their solutions:

  • Premature installation on lightweight concrete before shrinkage has occurred.
  • How to correct this: Once the concrete surface has hardened and a hollow area has formed, inject ADIN so that the problem disappears completely.
  • Lack of preparation of the tile or mounting surface.
  • How to correct this: If a surface has not been cleaned or primed properly before installation, ADIN should be sprayed in afterwards. The adhesive also acts as a primer, ensuring optimal adhesion.
  • Wrong choice of tile adhesive. Tile adhesive dries out quickly when used on large tiles.
  • How to correct this: If there has been an attempt to match natural stone with the poor adhesion of tiles or similar, use ADIN's free-flowing properties to fill any remaining air pockets by injecting the adhesive directly under the tile.
  • Ignoring the package's prescribed "waiting time" when opening.
    • Ignoring best practice techniques.
    • Do not turn off the underfloor heating.
      • This can easily cause the adhesive to not set properly. If this happens, simply inject ADIN to restore proper adhesion.
